About a year ago I saw a homemade flier at a coffee shop from a
local band of punk rock middle school kids called Jackie Rocks. It
was so hardcore and cute at the same time–like a kitten in biker
leather–that it stuck in my head and I finally got around to checking
out their myspace page tonight.
The internet and my space has forever changed the landscape for
the adolescent rockstars-to-be. They have videos and recorded
tracks (available on I-tunes), and a link to a site where you can buy
their t-shirts.
They also have their own website http://www.jackierocks.com
Look out Donnas, Jackie really does rock, and she even writes her
own music. Their musical influences include Avril Lavigne, Linda
Rondstadt, and the Cure. Awesome.
I wish I’d been that cool at 13. Actually, I wish I was that cool at 31.
LOVE YOUR LOCAL BAND THE GOOD TIMES
July 26, 2007 Written by Amanda Martinez
Jackie Rocks (JR) may be one of this town’s hardest-working local
bands. Having played more than 90 gigs since they first formed in
February of 2006, there’s no doubt that the six members of JR are
serious about their commitment to their music. They are also all in
middle school. Wait a minute—what? “Our biggest fanbase is
probably first through third grade,” says Jackie Partida, the band’s
frontwoman, founder and vocalist, who just turned 13 last month.
Partida took to music early, finding her voice at age 3 and later,
picking up the guitar at the ripe old age of 8. “I taught myself the
guitar,” says Partida. “My dad had a few chords that he knew, so
he showed them to me and I took it from there.” A love of music
and an increasing desire to perform drove Partida to form JR at
age 12. Less than a year and a half later, Partida and her band
have played the gamut of Santa Cruz venues from intimate coffee
shops to outdoor festivals to the cavernous Catalyst. If you’re
wondering about stage fright, Partida says it’s not an issue. “I love
the whole idea of performing in front of a lot of people,” she says.
“It makes me feel free. I feel at home on stage.” With its growing
repertoire of originals, all penned by Partida, JR’s music
seamlessly folds the effervescence of pop into the badass attitude
of rock ‘n’ roll, achieving a perfect synthesis of hope and angst.
“Rock On” captures the unaffected euphoria of youth, with its
upbeat instrumentals and lyrical tour of some of Santa Cruz’s most
beloved, bohemian hangouts. “Sinking Star” kicks off with an
ominously chromatic guitar and bass line, a perfect prelude to its
heavy lyrical exploration of apathy and dissatisfaction. A source of
inspiration to so many young minds, Partida offers this advice for
her fans: “believe in yourself.”

meaning of “Rock.” Jackie, on lead guitar and vocals, writes all

Teens prove that rock 'n' roll a game for the young
By Graham Haworth
Sentinel correspondent
Rock 'n' roll has no age limit. On one end of the spectrum, you've
got Mick Jagger and Keith Richards still prancing around huge
stages well into their seventh decade of life. And on the complete
other end of the spectrum, you've got the four bands playing
Saturday afternoon at Don Quixote's in Felton: Crimes of Passion,
Jackie Rocks, He's Dead Jim and Billy the Kid.
"One of the biggest talents performing Saturday has to be Jackie
Partida, guitarist and songwriter for Santa Cruz's own Jackie
Rocks. These kids are barely out of middle school, but Partida's
songwriting chops are well beyond her years. She counts Sheryl
Crow, Avril Lavigne, the Cranberries, Heart and System of a Down
among her main influences. You'll also hear some Joan Jett and
the Donnas float through some of her tunes.
Check out the band during open mic nights every Monday at the
E3 Playhouse in downtown Santa Cruz. Hear some of Partida's
songs online at www.myspace.com/jackierocksband or at

"After about an hour, the band stops playing, and Ruthie and I resume
normal conversation. I find out later that Margaritaville is helping to
promote local youth bands. The singer of this particular group, called
Jackie Rocks, has written all the songs herself -- at the tender age of 13.
Restaurant manager Shelly Amin says that as well as the exposure that
band members get by playing, they also get free dinner from anything on
the menu. They can sell their CD's too, and the money goes to help
school music programs."

Fifteen bands took on this year's challenge. Contestants entered the
competition by recording a performance, posting it online and then submitting
a link to access their performance. All entries were posted on the official Teen
Tech Week "Battle of the Bands" web page and viewers were invited to cast
their vote for up to three bands. More than 1,900 votes were cast.
The five bands receiving the most popular votes were invited to continue in the
competition by giving a public performance before a live audience and a panel
of community judges, which also included: Leticia Domingo, Radio DJ (89.7
FM, KFJC); Andrew Kutsenda, Lead Coordinator for PinUp Productions; and
Brandon Kwock and Bryce Freeman, co-founders of "The Study" Music Venue.
Second place, carrying a $100 gift certificate, was awarded to Jackie
Rocks Band, a hard rock/power pop trio from Santa Cruz County.
GROWING UP IN SANTA CRUZ APRIL 2009
Jackie Rocks…and Sings and Plays Guitar
Written by Suki Wessling
A day in the life of a highschooler can be busy: school,
homework, sports practice, music practice, traveling to
Philadelphia to perform in front of adoring teen fans…
OK, maybe that last part is fantasy for most teenagers, but for
Jackie and De'Andre of local teen group Jackie Rocks Band,
that’s life…at least sometimes.
Among their latest achievements was winning Seventeen
Magazine’s national “She’s a Star” contest. They were flown to
Pennsylvania to perform at a Teen Fashion Rocks show,
opening for MTV’s Making the Band star Donnie Klang.
They also got a thousand dollar shopping spree. Jackie, the
band’s guitarist, lead singer and songwriter, bought clothes.
Joanna, the drummer, bought an American-made Stratocaster.
De’Andre, the bassist, bought a Squier bass guitar and boogie-
boarding fins.
All three are thrilled that their band is getting recognition outside
of Santa Cruz. And they’ve been working hard to make it
happen. As students at Aptos, Soquel, and Harbor High
Schools, their work on the band takes place evenings and
weekends, sandwiched into an already busy schedule.
“It can be kind of difficult sometimes, getting on the homework,”
admits De’Andre. “Some days I have basketball practice right
after school, so I have to juggle it all.”
The band started with Jackie, who wanted to learn to play Heart’
s “Crazy On You” on the guitar. Soon she began writing her own
songs and singing. When they were in sixth grade, Jackie and
De’Andre, buddies since preschool, formed a band.
Now the band is tight with a growing following and a secure
sense of who they are.
“When I was younger I wrote mostly about things I wished could
happen,” Jackie says. “I wrote a song called “Fly Away,” which
was about dreaming about being able to fly.”
Lately, though, their songs have had more teenage themes. “I
really like our songs and I think they’re really sophisticated,
Each one has its own thing going and they’re all their own
songs.”
The band has plans well into the future, with a summer ’09 tour
in Southern California, and hopes for a career well past high
school.
When asked of her plans for the future, Jackie says, “To
achieve success…of course!”

She followed 7 guys that really tore it up. But once Jackie got up there she
was amazing , no fear."

Jackie is 15 she is the Singer and plays Lead Guitar.
De'Andre is 14 he sings Back up and plays Bass.
Greg is 17 and plays drums.
Why do you think there are so many new teen bands?
There are many new programs, for example "Be in you own Band" that
offer help to teens with their idea of starting a band. More young bands
seem to be popular right now, and us teens look at that and think, "we can
do that too!" but it takes a lot of dedication and hard work. Mainly it's just
about having fun!
What are the goals of the band?
The goals of the band are to really just take it as far as we can and to be
as successful as we can with our music, before we had off to college. We
are very passionate about this, and the experiences we are having along
the way are awesome!
Greg: To be a giggin' as a jazz drummer.
Jackie: To be a successful musician /songwriter and to learn as much as
possible about music and the music industry.
De'Andre: My ultimate goal is learning all I can as musician (jazz, classical,
etc.) and to take my music to as high of a level as I can.
Why did you start playing music?
Greg: it's what I've wanted to do as a career
Jackie: I've always had a passion for music, and I wanted to express it!
De'Andre: I started playing music because my cousin Nathan knew how to
play bass and I was really influenced to start learning how to play bass. I
also got into music from playing at my middle school.
Have you had any lessons or training?
Greg: I've taken drum lessons from Joe DeRose privately and have had
many instuctors in Marching Band and Drum Corporations
Jackie: I've been taking lessons from Ken Draft for about two years now.
De'Andre: I took beginner lessons for about a month and a half, but other
than that I haven't had any lessons and I'm all self-taught.
Do your parents support your music?
Greg: Yes, they dive me wherever I need to be, and they pay mostly
everything.
Jackie: Yes, my parents are very supportive because they are always at
the shows and they take care of me when I need help.
De'Andre: My parents drive me places and buy me musical supplies, and
help any way possible.

Jackie Rocks well beyond their age
SUBMITTED BY EDDIE ON WED, 10/07/2009 - 13:12.
A little while back I hit up a rock concert in Santa Cruz, Calif. at the
Catalyst. The opening band was called Jackie Rocks, named after
the 15-year-old lead singer and guitar player.
I was upstairs in the bar shooting pool and having beers with friends
when the band caught my attention. Sounded like Pat Benetar was
playing downstairs. Jackie Rocks busted out a set of original music
and a couple covers that blew MY MIND. I hit 'em up for their contact
info so I could check out their stuff. Take a look at the Alicia Keys
cover of No One they performed that night.

Teen trios advance in national battle of the bands
SANTA CRUZ -- Local trio Jackie Rocks Band has advanced to
third place in a national battle of teen bands, following close
behind Almost Chaos and eclipsing Rapid Fire, which currently
rank seventh among 10 bands in the Western region of the
contest's semifinals.
The top two bands in each region will go to Anaheim, where
they'll compete in front of judges with teen acts from across the
nation in the last stage of the SchoolJam USA contest. The bands
are vying for a trip to Germany and money for their school music
programs.
The three Santa Cruz bands in the semifinals are undergoing
less of a battle and more of a friendly competition, says Jackie
Partida, 15, who calls the other musicians "good friends" of Jackie
Rocks Band. The singer-songwriter mentored the members of
Rapid Fire, three middle-schoolers who went on to win the Teen
Battle of the Bands at the Santa Cruz Public Library in August.
Fans can cast votes online at schooljamusa.com through Dec. 5.
If voters push Jackie Rocks Band into the finals, the trip to
Anaheim will be part of a long list of recent travels for Partida's
band. The teens earned a trip to Philadelphia in October to
perform at a mall as winners of Seventeen Magazine's "She's a
Star" contest, and just three weeks ago they played at a San
Francisco 49ers pregame at Candlestick Park.
"It's a bit easier to play in front of bigger crowds," says Partida,
whose influences include Pat Benatar. The teen made her
musical debut as a toddler, singing Linda Ronstadt's "Blue
Bayou" for handful of her mother's colleagues.
Partida and her band members take turns traveling between
Santa Cruz and San Jose for their weekly rehearsals. Their
bassist, 17-year-old Greg Brock, attends Santa Teresa High
School in San Jose, while drummer De'Andre Warren, 15, is a
student at Soquel High School. Partida attends Pacific Collegiate
School.
